JESUS FUCKING CHRIST – ‘Homophobia Is Totally Gay’ Review

Jesus Fucking Christ and his self-described “Eclectic Electric Hardcore” EP release through Venn Records.

This is an intensely intriguing EP. I have to admit on my first listen, I just did not get it. And smart money says that most people wont get it – especially on their first listen.

I was expecting clear cut songs, and at first, everything just sounded like a random splatter of genres that were roughly gelled and mix-matched together without any rhyme or reason. I could see the vocal hooks in the more Hardcore-Punk influenced single. ‘Imma Gonna Kick U In Da Face’, but the randomly bleeting and blooping Electronica and Hip-hop aspects of the collected work confused and jarred me.

This is not at all what I expected from a Venn release. And it was this intrigue that drove me to finally get to grips with it; what could they see that I couldn’t?

The more I listened the more I realised that my initial response was perhaps intentional on the part of the artist. Maybe Jesus Fucking Christ intended it to be jarring.

The EP takes it’s listener to a dark and brooding place. Did you ever feel that intense claustrophobia while listening to ‘Atrocity Exhibition’ by Joy Division? Well that unpleasant sonic experience is reciprocated by “bookending” you with this EP; in opening track ‘Doomsday Device’ and the closing ‘Sometimes My Arms Bend Back’ – the only difference being the clear sense of setting that Joy Division’s masterpiece had.

The only way can I really describe it is as the Electronica equivalent of Black Metal. Nauseating yet hugely intriguing. Throughout vocalist Remi Semshaug Langseth barks with all the intensity of Hardcore, adding a serrated edge that cuts painfully to the ear. The man is clearly taking no half measures in his blatant attempts to create something truly original.

Whether it is worth your while as ‘listenable’ music is debatable, but that is of course on your own terms. However, it is a disturbingly psychedelic experience I strongly recommend it.
