Fat Spatula – Self Titled EP Review

Fat Spatula – York, England, United Kingdom.

York based Spatula-shaped Low-Fi-PunkAlternative Rock-Sleaze.

Sitting around drinking beer and slacking off is always that “typical” image of what your average DIY band is normally doing on a weekday.  But Fat Spatula live up to their “slacker” image in that perfect, Northern greasy fry-up way – they are no Mac DeMarco slackers.

I don’t know what’s more inviting, the cover to their self-titled EP – just look at those beans! – Or the actual band name. And like the fattest spatula you’ve ever seen, their four track EP will serve you some fine “guitar racket” to soundtrack your life sitting around and doing nothing… AKA, your degree.

‘Just You’ is waking up in the morning, thinking about going for a Skate, but instead, you end up frying off some fat bacon. Really though, the songs Lo-Fi kick-in is a cracking wake up call to start the EP off with.

Sure, sometimes bands can be “too Lo-Fi”, and they can be “Lo-Fi because Lo-Fi is cool”, but Fat Spatula pull it off with ease on this release. The guitar noodling as showcased in all its sticky egg-fried rice glory on ‘Mr Snitch’, a song where Bass player Alix’s vocals really compliment the chants of ‘Mr Snitch you’re a bitch’ coming from lead singer, Nick. You’re filling me up.

‘Growing Boy’ is about a growing boy with no brain.

‘There’s nothing there/under my hair, under my skull/nothing at all

Struggling with the troubles of adolescence and facing a “normal” teen, but he doesn’t care that “life isn’t fair“, he just, well, he just knows that he’s a growing boy.

‘Tennessee Hooker’ is the standout. The heavy sleazy intro that bangs out like a red light district made up of empty tin cans and wild dogs rockets to being the catchiest song on the EP. And I’m full.

Fat Spat

At the end of the day, Fat Spatula are getting through the day, and they’re helping you get through the daily grind. Their baked bean reality is one that should be embraced by all, at least until you get your life “together”.
