Kaninchen Want Your Dark Parts – Single Debut!

Kaninchen

Two introductions to make in this article. Firstly, hi, I’m Bethany, and I’m the newest writer on Musically Fresh.

Second, meet Cornish two-piece, Kaninchen, who blend Spoken-word, Electronica and Noise, to create an even greater… noise. Specifically, noise in the form of their debut single, ‘I Will Take The Dark Parts Of You And I Will Eat Them’, which I will start by only describing as, “different”.

Seriously, this needs to be heard to believed.

I immediately appreciate the band’s niche, as the clever use of Electronic and Acoustic techniques as well as Spoken Word makes for an amalgamation of sounds you probably didn’t know could exist.

The song opens with a very Cornish feel, leading with an almost wave-like noise. So if you’re a local (or reside by the sea), you’ll feel right at home.

The pace soon picks up though, resulting in a song which becomes somewhat uneasy listening at times. The fact is, you’ll experience many ups and downs throughout this track, but this is what makes it exciting in a whole new way.

I can’t seem to find any other music that sounds like this (admittedly, this isn’t my usual forte), but it does remind me of the music in the Alien film franchise. Eerie. Creepy. Dark.

The magic really happens when the Spoken Word kicks in. The exasperation in the vocals when teamed with the unique backing track sounds almost paranormal. And the lyrics – if you can decipher them – are quite moving;

     ‘I think of you before I sleep, my lips to God I promise to replace these fragile memories with something less foreboding…’

Everything about this duo is anything but ‘simple’. Kaninchen posses the ability to absorb inspiration; whether it’s from Bob Dylan to Nine Inch Nails to the didgeridoo, as well as TV & film.

In fact, the lyrics are based around David Lynch’s Thriller/Horror series, Twin Peaks.

And let’s take a minute to appreciate this thought;

‘I don’t know how long regret existed before we attached a word to it.’

The duo has certainly found a style which mutually benefits their talents. The over-artsy sound is an acquired taste, nonetheless, throwing visual effects and performance art into their videos and live shows is greatly entertaining. The video alone is like being on a bad trip.

Despite how theatrical and artsy-fartsy this single may be, Kaninchen should definitely be checked out if you fancy yourself something completely unconventional and original. So go on, let them eat the dark parts of you.
