Remember when Ska-Punk was still fun but not an over-saturated gimmick? Well, you should probably feast your eyes and ears on this lot.

Recently we received a review request from Skaciety, a Ska-Punk band from Sittingbourne, inquiring about a possible review of their 2014 debut, …For Your Age. It’s been a while since Musically Fresh featured Ska-orientated music, so we set to listening.

A disclaimer of sorts; I’m not saying I dislike the fun-time Ska of Reel Big Fish and the like. It’s great. I just miss the sharper edges.

Sharper edges which came with bands such as Operation Ivy, and contemporary groups such as Random Hand and recent MFers These Creeps (CLICK HERE), as well as personal and MF favourites Riskee And The Ridicule (CLICK HERE).

Eleven tracks of Skate Punk-infused, Ska-driven and brass-laden Punk-Rock music that will make you wonder why the hell you haven’t listened to Skaciety yet, or the genre for more than the token songs.

I had fallen out of Ska orientation for the most part. Track one changed that.

‘I Don’t Know Who You Are Anymore’, ‘This Trust’ and ‘Hard Realisation’ are your Punk-Rock numbers. Faster harder tracks leaning towards a more Skate Punk foundation.

The Ska is as well infused as it can be, and with good reason, but one of the core strengths of this band is their ability not to over do the Ska elements; either by track, and by their placement on the album.

‘I gave a shot at being what everyone had already deemed I was not, but once again I was a failure. I guess it’s just not in my nature. So why repeat what’s been done before? Continue on, never to reform? I don’t believe that should be the status quo, accepting, accepting only what we already know’ – ‘Lost The Plot’

‘Why Give Up?’ employs brazen brass and driven rhythms and will clearly go down well at the string of festivals where the band have stages booked for this summer, including: Rebellion Festival, Undercover Festival in 3 Chords Festival and Cornwall. I look forward to seeing them, and the crowd reactions.

‘Pass The Blame’ employs the strong and witty socio-political edge, with a musical backing that will be physically impossible to sit still to.

The Rancid fans will enjoy this one. An intro that could have been on …And Out Come the Wolves, followed by a Ska beat that is as classic as it is fresh.

‘Ignorance is bliss, but only for the ignorant. Until the illusion is shattered then the things which do not matter, will to you…’

I could rattle on further about how this release is exactly what I needed in order to reignite the love of embarrassing dancing to Punk-Rock rhythms, that becomes further fuelled with good times, beer and probably a second dose of Alco-booze (a term coined by an MF reader). Simply so, in fact but I won’t… too much.

I was presently surprised by this album. So, if you like Punk-Rock and Ska music and fancy something that can become the soundtrack to your summer (or in the case of our UK readers – when it’s not raining), then you’ll find all the info and direct links below very useful:

  • The band’s Facebook will cater to your needs and keep you up to date.
  • Head over to bandcamp where the band’s music is available in the “FREE/Name Your Price” bracket. Merch can also be found via bandcamp. I’m royally tempted by one of those shirts…
  • Don’t forget to check the band out live. Disappointment isn’t in their repertoire.

‘You know you guys are pretty good, FOR YOUR AGE.’

‘Yeah, cheers mate.’
