Holding Absence are five-piece from Cardiff. The band have recently released their debut single, ‘Immerse’, and about time too, as the band have been as itching as the scores of likers on their Facebook page to finally release their recorded material. Enough anticipation, let’s take a look shall we?

So much contemporary Melodic Hardcore is more Post-Hardcore-focussed these days. Granted, it is to varying degrees, but it’s still safely entrenched within the scene. Personally, I was expecting something more on modern Post-Hardcore lines with fewer faster sections, harder vocals and slower ambient sections.

My assumption was only partially (bugger) correct this time however. Their strong melodic rhythms and guitar leads demonstrate perfectly how the band/genre hasn’t forgotten the fast Punk-Rock of old-school Melodic Hardcore – Brownie points from me boys! That said, laced over the top the lead guitar is a very pleasing Touche Amore-esque sound.

Tempo changes elude the Post-Hardcore structural influence, as do the vocals. Now I’m not a huge fan of vocals in this vein, as it sounds all a bit Pierce The Veil for me, BUT – having said that – what Holding Absence have put together is an emotionally charged Melodic Hardcore assault, which has left me itching for more.

‘Immerse’:

          Immerse ~
          1. (Immerse oneself or be immersed) Involve oneself deeply in a particular activity:
           – He immersed himself in her love.
           – She was still immersed in her thoughts.
