Alternative Rock has had many heydays, the 90s and the early 2000s are both credible eras in which bands such as Ash and Feeder with their charged pace and thick riffs churned out everything from the heavy to the light and the poppy.

It was all quiet on the Alt-Rock-Front for a while until bands such as Biffy Clyro, Arcane Roots and Press To Meco came to prominence. The aforementioned references not just because they are some of the more diverse and notable bands in the epoch but also because they have a direct influence on the band we are here to take in, Blank Atlas.

The band are set to release their debut EP on the 14th October, entitled ‘Solitude’, it contains five tracks of hard work that you can find a few words on below.

‘Lost At Sea’ was the forerunner for the EP. It gave us a Pop-Punk and Pop-Rock glazed Alternative Rock ballad that was able to change mood at the drop of a chord. ‘Lost A Sea’ is approachable and plentiful in hooks with its ending riff suggesting a harder side to the band, a technical and musically precise side that you can’t helping wanting more of.

‘Running’ is thickly riffed, melodic and playful it its own way alongside thoughtful lyrics. Although the pop-hooks are perfectly sung with the three part harmonies do their bit, they both starkly contrast the thick guitar work and arguably diminish the presence of the instrumentals in general. That said, there is a definite Feeder-esque feel and that’s something that you can’t fault.

‘Buried’ is ignited in the Blank Atlas fashion once more. It boasts another melodic mid-tempo track, with soaring vocal melodies and an ode to the past and the hard realisation of the need to return home.

‘Trapped my own head, I just cant fight it, I’m letting it in, feeling so sick, I just wanna go… home, home’

The opening to ‘Miles Apart’ sends your mind to the Foo Fighters before the unmistakable English-accented vocals, sombre and defeated guide you back to the harsh-guitar and the bands trademark melodies. The down-tempo sections are very well crafted and are a high point on the release, with the vocal harmony solo ending the track sitting as a surprise but impressive nonetheless.

‘Liar’s Eyes’ is not only the hardest track on the EP but it employs such a tactic without straying too far from the path trod by the previous four songs. All together with more attitude and punchy guitar-work, its the biggest sounding on the release and the ideal track to end on.

Blank Atlas have crafted a solid effort for the debut EP, proving that Alternative Rock is still flowing on the underground rather than just through the veins of the big players.

As much as it arguably lacks a certain level of aggression and a darker aesthetic at times and you find yourself craving the occasional techy-riffs substantially, what you see is what you get and that ladies and gents, is another great Bristol band.
