We’ve been somewhat quiet recently. That thing called life has been throwing a variety of curveballs in our way and it hasn’t been the least bit preferable. It’s in these situations that many rely on music to calm the soul and provide rest-bite from it all, which is precisely why we are here today, for Truro four-piece Hypophora.

Fresh Picks are shorter articles that are designed simply to inform Mfers of bands that downright deserve attention, so with Hypophora, we wont keep you too long.

The band take influence from notable names in both Alternative Rock and Post-Hardcore, applying the more melodic trends of contemporary Post-Hardcore with a musical backing that echoes the past and the genre’s early days with the likes of Fugazi, Rites Of Spring and more.

Now before I am called out by purists, I am not saying these bands are solidified comparisons but the basic outline is present, showing that this musically proficient and obviously skilled band have been doing their homework.

Notably a certain guitarist within this four-piece is often seen sporting a Red Hot Chili Peppers shirt and with that observation we have an obvious personal and band-wide influence.

‘Youth’ flirts with this Psychedelic/Funk guitar work, contrasting well with Kate McConnell’s soaring vocals that would please any fan of the more melodic side of Alexisonfire or Letlive.

‘Caught’ takes a more Alt. Rock route and strikes you as a track that would sound huge live with its lumbering rhythms and again, soaring vocal work and impressive range.

With the strength of the band’s work thus far showing coherence but also suggesting a penchant for simply turning off into uncharted territory, Hypophora are one to watch. The band also have their past material on their SoundCloud and bandcamp pages with tracks such ‘Be All, End All’ and ‘Hipster Blood’ warranting your attention and showing a different side to the band.

‘Youth’ and ‘Caught’ were released as a double A-side single via Easy Action Records. You can find Easy Action and the band below:
