Before I carefully place my objective hat on my head I will admit this ditty little article has some personal links to it. Before we introduce Hip-Hop/Rock four-piece NaNNiK I feel I should mention my time growing up with vocalist Keir O’Brien Hobbs and our and indeed MF’s ancestral home, the Isle Of Wight.

Musically Fresh has enlightened me to plethora of new music but it as alway a pleasure to see your peers making it themselves and with that, my objective hat is now back on.

The current ensemble that is NaNNiK is a DIY unit based in Brighton where they have been writing, recording, mixing their own music completely independently for the past two years, with the Dope (This Is Just A Demo) EP standing as the most recently release.

Although a band with Dubstep roots, NaNNiK are undeniably a Hip-Hop band, the dark, aggressive and almost haunting tones of underground Hip-Hop accosts you through the tone of the full-band backing track but also through the again unrelenting aggressive UK Hip-Hop/Grime vocal delivery.

Lyrically speaking NaNNiK are mature and avoid much of gimmicks associated with Hip-Hop led music but at the same time there still a certain level of abandon and disregard on a general rather than a song specific level.

In many ways NaNNiK can be seen as an excellent choice for a cinematic soundtrack. Aggressive Rock-based Hip-Hop has been used for such a purpose before and that brings us back to the band’s claim as a Hip-Hop\Rock band.

NaNNiK make use of a full band live and in recording and ply this with the tricks of trade of more traditional Hip-Hop backing tracks, ultimately subduing the Rock-led elements to their sound. With that said however there is still some stellar work on show, particularly in the rhythm section and in the sometimes underlying but crucial guitar work. ’23 Minutes’ stands as an excellent example.

NaNNiK’s sound does work despite this lacking in weight but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t yearn for a harder more obvious Rock sound.

Despite this, NaNNiK’s DIY approach and full band delivery is still crucial to their sound. Now, that may seem like an empty complimentary statement but the band’s sound has that raw and crucial difference to it and stands well in the world of underground Hip-Hop.

In short, NaNNiK know what they are doing and they are a band that have their sights on something more and with assurances of new music on the way, the progression isn’t about to stop.
