London Rick and Morty enthusiasts No Insight have recently released their debut EP as earths entry for Planet Music and it is entitled Chasing Memories.

After a token intro of sounds bites and light distortion, the band break straight into what was their debut and lead single of the EP, ‘These Days’. Immediately you are hit by a mid-tempo riff lending itself to a time where Green Day were on top of their game before a more contemporary pace takes charge.

As the first real track the band released ‘These Days’ bar its backing vocals lacking the needed intensity to take the track all the way, stands well in its well rooted almost classic Pop-Punk.

The eponymous track is always important on any release but notably on a debut and with ‘Chasing Memories’ there is very much a “I hate this town” Pop-Punk cliche lyrically which depending on your personal taste, could sit the track either side of your opinion.

Musically, the verses and guitar tone mark them in far more modern ground while the distorted guitars in the chorus’ are far heavier than you would expect and alongside the drawn-out solo elude to a far rockier sound perhaps yet to come.

The biggest issue with this EP as a whole isn’t so much a band with a developing sound, as this takes as long as is needed on a per band basis but rather the recording. This itself can be excused as it’s obviously not always possible to afford the perfect polish but it does sadly see their sound suffering.

That said, the final track of this debut encompasses its predecessors evenly matching No Insight’s pop-hooks and Punk as well as is possible in another shameless showing of their adoration for Rick and Morty.

Despite recording and clarity issues, the lead riffs and lines are far tighter and driven and the contrast between the almost shouted vocals and the lighter croons bring the focus of love loss and friction forward far more smoothly.

Chasing Memories in truth is hampered and disadvantaged yet despite this, No Insight have pieced together an EP through genuine conviction and commitment. It’s not perfect but what is and with that they leave themselves a good foundation to build on.
