All Hail Hyena At A Glance…

All Hail Hyena – Burnley, England, United Kingdom.

‘We are the feeling you get when you first dip your knees into a warm bath;
the exciting shudder you develop when peeing after a long and arduous bus ride.’

When we opened this request on our Facebook page, we were greeted in a complimentary fashion and it made us laugh, laughter that then lead to a smile at the sight of the name, All Hail Hyena, marking this Burnley band as anything but normal.

To date the band have their debutĀ StickersĀ EP up for audio digestion and for a band that cite themselves as ‘punkgaragepsychemathrockmetal’, they sit quite unpredictable grinning at your until you hit play. Their first ever single ‘Man Up’ almost sounds akin to a cross of Fugazi and Primus with an odd Post-Punk/New Wave rumble. Vocally it almost sounds like a “normal” song before the chorus is invaded by a vocalist from another band entirely, stylistically speaking at least.

All Hail Hyena are very much aware of their idiosyncrasy and they wear it in as much plain sight as they can. The band are adept at being themselves. You never know what to expect in every sense of their compositions and it’s really quite refreshing. ‘Way Ho!’ is an excellent example of this with genre crossing bedlam playfully executed with what would be fittingly physically depicted as people in Black Metal garb substituting said black for every colour of the rainbow and then whirling their bodies and hair around like nobodies’ business.

Punk, a more traditional Metal approach, Post-Hardcore, Math-Rock – this band are very much carelessly adding their progressive fingers to the cooling pies of the music world and it may well be weird, a little much and quite perplexing at times but it doesn’t diminish both the attempt at its clear skill.

Fans of the early Punk-Funk days of Flea and his work with the Red Hot Chili Peppers will find something here, with ‘Sabbathian’ definitely drawn on those umming-and-arring over such a comparison.

I was considering trying to dechipher this band further but I am enjoying myself too much, so alas I leave it to you. All Hail Hyena are more than impressive, enjoy!
