The Patient are relatively fresh on the Melborune Punk and Hardcore circuit, forming in 2015 via a love for fast Punk-Rock, crunching Hardcore and appreciation for bands such as Gallows, Every Time I Die, The Bronx, Down To Nothing and Raised Fist to name a few, they decided to make some of their own noise.

I’ve been living in Melbourne for a few months now and although having work taking up a great deal of my time, have been lucky enough to experience just about enough of this vibrant music scene to say that it’s variety is well worth your time in it’s numerous stylistic appreciations and strong scene coherence, especially when it comes to Punk.

The Patient’s sound wears it’s influences well, as you can hear the Hardcore infused Hard Rock of The Bronx in tracks like ‘Violet’ and the band’s earlier sound in EP opener, ‘Unite As One’, which is as close to the faster end of the genre that The Patient get and boasts one of the best on the Demo.

The four piece indeed unite as one in this furious old-school Hardcore blast, with vocals that emulate the strained “clean” vocals of the early days as much as they do the now staple screams of the contemporary.

Unite as one is a clear stand out track on a very solid debut release‘ – Shannon Davis, Bombs Are Falling.

‘One Man Show (Countdown)’ is another Hardcore Punk staple in sound, with it’s tin-bass rumble and violently abrasive rhythms, it’s nothing new, but it works and that’s what The Patient are about.

‘We are not trying to reinvent the wheel but only to express our different tastes in Music.’

The release in general carries a very British or UK Hardcore vibe that is hard to ignore, at least for me, as I grew up in southern England and Gallows and the related bands were all key to my listening as much then as they are now.

Gallows are cited as an influence on the band and I have since found out that Grey Britain is in fact a key influence in itself, but that isn’t to be said that fans of the current incarnation of Gallows wouldn’t find something here.

The down-tempo ‘Voices’ and the jagged ‘Time Is Our Possession’ are great examples of such an influence, with a more riff-laden, rockier and more metallic structure, akin to said album as well as the likes of Blackhole and even Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes.

‘Violet’ ends the Demo with it’s terrifying rage…

However, are there a few creases? Yes. Are they particularly important? No. This is Demo release after all, it may distort more than intended and skip slightly from time to time but that’s what Demo’s do and If I’m completely honest, if you’re in the right frame of mind it really adds to cathartic rage this release bleeds.
