Quit Yr Job Records seem to be developing a knack. A knack for digging up and uncovering some considerable underground talent. The label also has a thing for Post-Punk apparently so when you get some time – Click Here.
The Shuks hail from Bath and describe themselves collectively as Post-Punk and “Punky-Grunge”. This latter description is particularly clear within the intro of the first of their two track catalogue so far.
The Grunge gloom is present once the Punk-led charge has dissipated (don’t worry it does return) as the jangly yet still somewhat sombre guitar tone just about provides proof of the Post-Punk boast.
Am I criticising it? Perhaps slightly, but with this criticism there is also a strength situated safely on the flip-side. This strength is the weight the band have behind their sound as they don’t confine themselves to the dreary Post-Morrissey world more than is necessary. ‘You Want My Dirt’ is despite this, still raucous and dangerous as it teases you perpetually.
‘Running’ is far more coherent yet is also juxtaposed in its discordant tone and high-pitched distortion. Everything is heavier and each musician is less individually noticeable. This is not a criticism, but rather more of an observation and sign of things to come as with The Shuks, even at this fledgling stage at least in regard to releases their skill at a more layered sound as well as a more hands-on and full band assault is clear.
