Zombies No – ‘Divided We Fall’.
Zombies No – Paris, France.
Since its inception, Punk music in general has become a global phenomenon and rallying cry. The sheer level of diversity within how and where this fast-aggressive but heartfelt genre is found and represented is growing year by year and with our good friend the internet, is more accessible than ever.
Enter Zombies No, a fast abrasive Punk-Rock band recently relocated to Paris from far off Venezuela and now partnered up with growing UK underground Punk label, Umlaut Records.
After an intro of samples from news reports and commentaries depicting a world gone mad and in chaos, Zombies No break in with fast melodic Skate Punk that slowly and smoothly transitions into a jagged Thrash-led ensemble that only gives way to melody when it really must in ‘Visions’. The band craft an addictive driven and anthemic contemporary Punk-Rock song rough enough around the edges but also tuneful and approachable.
‘The Fall Of Reality’ for all intents and purpose ties itself more to classic Metal than it does Punk for the most part. That said however, anthemic guitar tones and defiant lyrics stand assertively before ‘Fear Market’ carries the melodic discordance further in the vein of a more jagged and dated No Use For A Name – ‘They are feeding us with fear among impunity heartlessly, corruption and mediocrity, they are trying to consume us’.
Zombies No can’t decide whether they want to pursue old-school US west-coast Hardcore Punk, melodic and tuneful Punk or jagged contemporary European Skate Punk and this three-fold indecision is their greatest strength. ‘Sing-Song’ channels this melodic penchant near-perfectly with the thick underlying weight of the drumming and jagged bass-lines still hinting at heavier climes in one of the best on the release.
If bands such as Straightline and their metallic Tech-Punk tickle your fancy then ‘Now’ is a track built for your playlists and reluctant walk to work on a release that is quite consistently getting stronger per track.
It is at this point where I shall leave you decipher and enjoy the last two tracks on your own. The band’s excellent song-writing captures contemporary Punk critique and frustration alongside fast, jagged and melodic Punk-Rock and that’s all you need really isn’t it?
