Matt Gleeson aka Sub v2.0 is a Melbourne based live music and art’s photographer, capturing Melbourne’s music scene as clearly as is possible, from the front, back and side of stages, streetscapes and more often than not, from the pit of a Punk-Rock show.

Musically Fresh has sampled some of Sub v2.0’s work before which ultimately led to this very article. All relevant links to Matt’sIMG_3473 work will be posted at the end, but for now, Matt’s passion for the Punk-Rock community and capturing it’s profile has led him to something extraordinary in the Passion 4 Punk project.

Passion 4 Punk was a result of a close friend of Matt Gleeson’s sadly taking his own life. Matt hadn’t seen his friend for a long time but the importance to his life was paramount, leaving him feeling helpless.

It was then that Matt began to increase his activity as Sub v2.0 ultimately ending in decision to produce a mini-gallery of images of Melbourne Punk music captured from December 2013 to December 2015. Said work was created with the aim of the book’s sale to benefit local charities dedicated to battling mental illness, depression and suicide in the community.

What followed was far more than the original simple gesture, support from all over Melbourne and other parts of Australia and even overseas has been seen in promoting what Matt Gleeson is doing, in his stand against what is an increasing societal affliction.

The book will contain images of 41 Melbourne based bands photographed from December 2013 to December 2015. Matt was kind enough to send us a few of the images for this article, one of which you may recognise from above and our review on Bombs Are Falling.

Some of the book’s content captures the initial announcement and benefit show for the project, which is nice touch and testament to how far this project has come.

Here is a sample list of just a few of the 41 Matt chose to feature in his book, do make note:

As well as gigs from the last two years and from the benefit show, Passion 4 Punk will also feature all 17 bands and artists set to play the release show on the 16th April 2016 at the Last Chance Rock ’n’ Roll Bar (formerly The Public Bar), 238 Victoria Street North Melbourne.

Information for that will be posted later as will the Facebook event, but before we go, Matt asked if we could feature a band from both the bill and the book and as featuring bands appears to be something we do, we handed Musically Fresh over to Mr. Gleeson.

Australian Kingswood Factory

IMG_4426

‘Melbourne based trio, Australian Kingswood Factory bring back the sounds of the hard working and hard playing Australian Pub Rock bands of the late 1970’s and 80’s. AKF’s obvious love of Bon Scott era AC/DC shines through in their live performances. The three lads, Carlos Desouza (drums), Chris Keogh (bass) and Lindsey Bush (guitar and vocals) have recently completed a tour of the east coast of Australia, launching their vinyl release – 245.

Tracks such as ‘Built To Last’ and ‘Two Lane Blacktop’ demonstrate the indelible stamp of early AC/DC, there are also strains of the rockabilly chug of the bass in tracks such as ‘Ballad of Fast Eddie’, and the lyrical imagery of ‘Devil’s Right Hand’ is reminiscent of many a country murder song. This melting pot of influences takes what could have ended up as being a very two dimensional and predictable rock album, and instead delivered an interesting listen, while maintaining enough grunt to keep fans of Aussie Rock happy.’

Well, we’re out of the job…

Passion 4 Punk: Melbourne Punk Music 2013-2015 will be available from mid April 2016 from Sub v2.0’s website, with it’s profits and that of the show on April 16th going towards charities fighting against depression and supporting those suffering with mental health issues.

On the night of the book launch, Sub v2.0 will be taking pre-paid orders for next batch of books to be printed for those people that aren’t lucky enough to grab the 60 copies that will be available for purchase on the night.

Matt has written volumes on this project, all of which a real eye opening read laden with his conviction and dedication. This however, is snippet from a conversation Matt and I had about the project and featuring it on Musically Fresh.

It’s not eloquent but it’s natural and that’s where we will leave you:

‘When it started I thought it was going to be a small solo project, but a bunch of amazing people have jumped on board and made this into something amazing.’
