The Without and The Debut ‘Factions’ EP.
The Without – Portland, Oregon, USA.
FIDLAR told me that I can’t buy liquor in Portland, Oregon and thats not the best first impression to get from an area on a coast you’d like to see one day, but then all of a sudden all negative opinion was negated. Why? Well, all in part to an aptly titled band that fits oh so well with this bullshit opening to a article, The Without.
Upon doing a little research on this very new on the scene four-piece, names such as Cancer Bats, Every Time I Die, Soundgarden and Deftones where repeatedly listed and I have to say, I agree.
The band takes the melodic gloom of the latter two mentions and merges it with the Southern Rock/Rock n’ Roll Hardcore Punk of the former but not without an appreciation of groove-laden Metal riffs to finish off.
A mid paced pummeling Punk intro greets you with just the right amount of Grunge aesthetic before the lighter side of Every Time I Die briefly shows its face. The chorus is huge and sounds very akin to the band Coercion (formally Coercion 96) who if this is tickling you, are worth finding – Click Here.
The comparisons to Soundgarden are particularly felt in the melodic vocals while in the bands screams Liam Cormier of Cancer Bats is an easy comparison and a compliment in itself. – ‘don’t get caught up in the truth, it’s so subjective […]’
‘Dead Gold’ bring forth the Sludge-toned Hardcore Punk more so and contrasts it really very well with the melodic delivery left over from the previous track and stands as one of the best on this debut.
With ‘Two Wolves’ you begin to release how versatile this band are. They could easily appeal to the more casual or even occasional Rock/Metal/Punk fan but also those with niche tastes in any of those or the aforementioned bands.
‘Two Wolves’ is a slow thud compared to its predecessors and is just memorable. – ‘You call it ordinary, I call it all wrong, you call it ordinary but you’re wrong.’
With the closing ‘Rat Party’ you are saddened that it is almost over but still sat smiling faced as the beckoning lines, riffs and the whole shabang rattles, rumbles, and triumphantly thuds victoriously down your ear canal in a way that makes Caesar’s return to Rome look pathetic.
