Radkey – ‘Feed My Brain’
Radkey – St Joseph, Missouri, United States Of America.
I’ve broken so many air guitars listening to this band.
I was most thankful to discover Radkey around a year ago courtesy of a good friend of mine. A band that – pardon the name dropping/pun – had such a fresh sound that echoed decades of musical genius and styles. A sound that was concocted into something that can only really be given justice by defining my own reaction as a set of intense ‘Multiple Eargasms’.
You get the idea. Essentially this is a band that Musically Fresh needs on the playlist and implores you to sit back, subject your hearing receptacles, enjoy and add it to yours.
Their recently released two EPs from last year, and a single this year are available in a variety of formats; displaying a solid, honest and original Punk Rock sound. However, as listed on their Facebook page, their influences don’t just cover Punk Rock royalty such as The Misfits, but bands such as The Beatles, Nirvana and Jimi Hendrix.
Any fan of Punk/Garage Punk/Garage Rock or to put it bluntly – no bullshit Rock n’ Roll – would do well to have a listen and judge for themselves. The three-piece deliver a Punk Rock tempo which is perfectly mixed with ballsy rock riffs and guitar solos, well written lyrics sang in style echoing Glen Danzig and an energy that highlights their youth and passion.
To the point, Radkey are exciting and show no trace of banality.
Feed My Brain – Single. 2014.
Released back in March this year and available for free download HERE, and on 7″ Vinyl from their website. ‘Feed My Brain’ shows the more ‘Rocky’ side to Radkey. With an arguably Stoner Rock groove opposed to the fast and furious, (no pun-like reference intended I promise) Punk speed that is so rife and expertly executed in many of their earlier recordings; it is certainly a song to bob along and bang your head too.
The intro and opening riff will certainly entice you, before leading into a slow groove that guides you through the verses of a young man who sings about his infatuation with his teacher. His forbidden love, the forbidden love of a student for his teacher or instructor that could easily be peril of them both.
Now, as much as this as a topic could be heavily criticised and has no doubt been done badly over the years; Busted being an example *shudder* Radkey deserve no such criticism. The tale is put across WITHOUT sounding like the whining ode of a school boy and is accompanied by a soaring, solid and bloody good rock song. My advice? Musically Fresh’s advice? Get it and get Radkey in your ears.
MF easily ranks the track at 10/10.
Other outstanding tracks from their back catalogue include: N.I.G.G.A (Not Ok), Out Here in My Head and Romance Dawn, which you can view below.
They sound kind of like Houdini-era Melvins, except sped up.
