Keeping Your Teeth Fresh Then Knocking Them Out – ‘Milk Teeth’
So if you have been paying attention, I have got a promise to get bands off my chest. So with that in mind here are Milk Teeth, another marvellous exponent of Venn Records.
There have been bands before that you could claim to be part of a Grunge revival (e.g. Dinosaur Pile-Up, Japanese Voyeurs, The Arkhamists etc) but it is very rare how a youthful Grunge revival bands provide something that sounds truly new. Enter Milk Teeth.
Forming in June of 2013, Josh (guitar/vocals), Becky (bass/vocals), Chris (guitar) and Olly (drums) have been composing a new approach to Grunge, incorporating effect pedal-fuelled guitar sections, distorted ‘Grunge’ riffs and distinctive vocals which alternate between Becky’s kitten-like purr to Josh’s guttural howling. What you are essentially left with is a Grunge/mild-Punk sound and attitude that would appeal to fans of either genres, and that has gotten us very hot under the collar here at MF. Sweaty.
Often to me, the sound of each of their songs is defined by who is singing. For example, when Becky takes the lead on ‘Vitamins’, it adds to the youthful Grunge-Pop feel. ‘Vitamins’ being a definite stand-out track with its cool-cat, high-pitched riff. If you want a better definition check out the music video, its got this addictive art student vibe that is ridiculously enticing.
Josh’s vocals are shown to lend themselves to the feeling of a good “sock in the throat”, with tracks such as the groove riddled ‘Forty Six’. With his desperately scratching and clawing chorus vocals and his blistering vocal efforts throughout the epic ‘Leanne’ (both of which feature on their Smiling Politely EP.
Milk Teeth have an exciting year ahead with their latest EP, Sad Sack (PRE-ORDER HERE), set to be released on the 26th of January, accompanied with a selection of shows throughout that month including the Venn records showcase on January 30th at the Black Heart in Camden. I want to go. You should go too! I mean, not only are Milk Teeth playing, but Baby Godzilla are also playing, and hell, Gallows have a DJ set amongst others! (Intensity EXPLOSION!).
But hey, the main thing to take from this short are that Milk Teeth are a sweet choice for ear candy heading into 2015. So make sure you go check them out at the following:
