The Autumn Levels are Metal five-piece from Dresden, Germany formed in 2013. They define their genre on their Facebook page as, ‘Adventurecore’. Yes, it seems we are yet to exhaust all potential “-core” genres – but I’m very much intrigued by this one.

In fact… I’ve Googled it. Relevant results? – ZERO. Just some strange robot called Rick.

Anyway, to further define their sound, the band class their music to be a mix of, ‘…messed Mathcore, complicated Post-Hardcore and Melodic Metalcore, without losing sight of the overall technical concept’ (or so Google translate will have me believe).

Essentially, the band are a Metalcore act, and a damn good one at that. They bludgeon, breakdown and howl with the best of them. Their first EP, The Ghosts We Called, demonstrates a ferocity that works well as an advertisement for live shows. Shows I would rightly presume to be chaotic.

Check Out opening track, ‘What We See’. Audible decimation.

In an increasing Metalcore trend, the moments of real quality on the first EP come from the sections in which the instrument hammering suddenly lulls into more soothing segments. This is particularly applicable to closing track, ‘Creon Feat. Kai Muller’, with its temperature switch echoing that of Rolo Tommasi‘s predictably eclectic, ‘Party Wounds’.

The Autumn Levels’ latest release ‘Return To Sender’, further emphasises the band’s ability to create an unholy amalgam of complex riffage and varying vocal styles to set alight the mosh pit. They’ve definitely spent some time sat down with a Parkway Drive record.

If you are into your Metalcore and like nurturing the young acts to see what they become in the future, invest your time in The Autumn Levels. These guys have displayed serious promise.
