Cold Summer formed in 2011, and are based in and around both Wakefield and Leeds. The band have two EPs under their belt, with their third, Fight To Survive, out on the 1st of April this year, which you can currently pre-order now via the wonderful mediums of iTunes and bandcamp.

The band often wear their influences on their sleeve with the modern stylistics of Post-Hardcore and occasional sprinkles of Nu-Metal showing through, with bands like Alexisonfire, Deftones, Night Verses, Thrice, Limp Bizkit and Korn coming to mind.

Kicking off we have a welcome reverb on the guitar tone, before the descent into madness, using beefy chords with a little guitar squeal every so often. Harsh vocals kick in, which are a little difficult to understand, fitting in with much the modern day stylistics of the genre as a whole.

A redeeming feature follows with melodic vocals but all you can focus on are the angsty lyrics of ‘I’ve been to hell and back‘ which frankly seem somewhat cliche despite their obvious conviction.

Vocally, it sounds scarily like Fred Durst. However, with that said it does go into a really welcome breakdown, which is beefy as hell before going into the angsty Fred Durst lines ‘we fight and we fight, to survive and to survive’ once more. Don’t get me wrong, it is still appealing to a certain demographic and does it’s job but the sound is still very typical of the genre.

The anger and energy is certainly there but it feels uncertain in it’s direction. Post-Hardcore is one of those genres that really can be very interesting when bands think outside the box, an example being when Alexisonfire first made waves or the more contemporary acts such as Touche Amore, La Dispute and Letlive exploded, otherwise it’s just ticking the boxes of being a stereotype of the genre itself.

Cold Summer do have some credible and strong influences and have proven so with the last single from this forthcoming Fight To Survive EP, but with ‘Bear Eats Wolf’ they seem to have fallen short, the pieces are there but haven’t lived up to their full potential.

Does this mean they should be disregarded because of one bad track? Not at all, because as stated above, they are a capable band and this EP could still emerge as a strong release. The band are known for their experimentation and you have to respect them for that, even if this particular concoction isn’t as solid as previous efforts.
