One Direction – ‘You & I’ Review and Invitation for Fans to Remix
One Direction may not be to everyone’s taste – but it’s certainly difficult trying to deny their global domination.
Unashamedly, I am a fan of the entire band. Except Louis. I can’t stand Louis.
And today, they announced ‘You & I’ as the fourth single to be released from their third studio album, Midnight Memories. The album itself is still riding its successes, since reaching the number one spot in nineteen countries.
Reviewing the single wouldn’t take me long. It’s a simple ballad; gentle guitar and piano riffs, which lead to a climaxing rock finish – nothing special there. The lyrics are clearly the most interesting component to the track; poignant and evocative, and with a haunting echo.
I can just see fourteen year old girls putting this song on, clutching their teddy bears and having a cry after their twenty-six year old boyfriend dumps them after an eight-day online relationship – most likely because she wouldn’t stop talking about 1D.
If we’re using ‘Little Things’ as a measuring stick, it’s definitely not the band’s best work when it comes to emotional, love-ballads. Speaking as a fan, it is good, but definitely not a stand-out single from the lads.
That said, I certainly can’t deny that it will probably hit #1 in the Singles Charts because of the dedication and obsessive nature of the ‘Directioners’. In fact, I did scroll through Twitter to try find some fan comments on the single to prove my point, but literally every 15 seconds some fruitloop expresses their undying love for the band.
This single is actually the kind of song that would be playing in the background after the police find Niall’s bloodied body being cradled by a crazed fan wielding a knife.
The singles official release is currently dated at the 25th of May. And, until then, fans are able to create their very own remix of ‘You & I’.
After logging onto Soundcloud and visiting the 1D profile, fans will be able to download Liam’s exclusive remix – listed as the ‘Big Payno’ – and the tracks vocal stems. They can then produce their own remix, and upload it to the ‘You & I’ ‘The Remixes’ Group. And each week, Liam will construct a public playlist of his favourite mixes.
