Black Anchors and The Debut EP.

Black Anchors – North Devon, England, United Kingdom.

Fresh on the UK Punk and alternative scene we have Black Anchors. Imagine a band who have a clear penchant for the golden age of 90’s of Pop-Punk and an approach to Punk-Rock that focusses more on singing about day-to-day occurrences rather and down-right disaffection.

Now that isn’t a criticism but with the opening lines to this EP well and truly attaching themselves to your brain as much as the ear-worming bass tone in ‘Favourite Records’ – ‘Happiness if a moment, heaven is whenever, we’re gonna get better, gonna get better’ – you know what you’re in for.

‘Favourite Records’ is thoughtful and well-layered. The band’s Indie-laced vocals, Pop-Punk sensibilities and classic droning Punk bass stand them out from the off as just that little bit different within the crowd of ever-growing new bands.

‘Me, Tom Waits & An Empty Bottle Of Rum’ is again very thoughtful lyrically. Black Anchors tell a very real detailed story of emotion akin to the heart-punks of today from The Menzingersthat first album by The Gaslight Anthem and the more recent material from The Flatliners, ergo, contemporary Punk and Pop-Punk music can be mature and can have the feels. – ‘Singing Champagne supernova til we pass out on the sofa, lets do this over and over’.

‘Resurrection Summer’ toys with pace quite misleadingly before typical – but by no means bad – mid-tempo UK Pop-Punk with guitar work sometimes and quite notably showing a flare of dated-Alkaline Trio takes over in a purely addictive track.

Admittedly, I both expected and wished for a EP a lot faster more “traditionally” inclined and it to be so for the closing track but to my surprise the band decide on the semi-acoustic and insanely quotable (again) Indie leaning ‘Heavenly Lane’.

This eponymous EP on an objective level is well-put together, its honest, real, seamless and again really quite addictive despite a slight lack of pace. However with that said, on a more subjective note, prior to writing this piece I had been working on a piece on a band at the extreme end of Hardcore Punk so for an EP such as this to fall as addictively as it has on my own ears given that context says it all really.
