The Bear Social’s New EP – ‘Ursa Minor’

Musically Fresh have a love those independent, local artists that play intimate gigs, record great music and bring attention to their hometown. And for some reason, we seem to have a soft spot for the Isle of Wight.

The Island is a hive of unique music talent, and the latest band to be turning heads is the indie/alternative four-piece, The Bear Social, who this week released their 3-track EP, Ursa Minor.

I think it’s nothing but a compliment that if I were to compare them to anybody, I’d say a combination of Snow Patrol/The Strokes and The Pretenders – especially when hearing the distinctive riffs, combined with the Chrissie Hynde-like, enchanting voice of lead female vocalist, Abbie Hickey.

Track one, ‘When A Thought’, is the perfect combination of soft vocals, catchy riffs and damn fine production. Summer is coming up and this song is perfect for when you’ve got your mates round, there’s a BBQ going on and you’ve got beers on ice.

Next, ‘Love is a Flood’, showcases the chemistry of Hickey and male vocalist, Lewis Clark. Together, both their calm vocals make for compelling listening.

Finally, and in my opinion, the track that steals the whole damn show – ‘Smoke & Art’. I have literally been racking my mind for hours trying to put my finger on what elements from which bands this tune reminds me off – and every time I get a hint of one, another element of the track comes in and diverts me in another direction. You go on a journey and get lost in fine lyrics, dark undertones in the bass and guitar riffs and again, perfect production. Literally, I am so happy this track in 5 minutes long, because, fuck me, it’s a straight-up mesmerising pleasure to listen to.

Honestly, when you hear these tracks, you can hear and see main-stage music festival potential. They’re the perfect tempo and mood for that moment where the sun’s going down, you’ve had some drinks and you just want to hear great music for the next 4 hours.

All three tracks are available for just £2. That’s fuck-all when you consider the fact you get three great tunes that reflect the great talent and hard work that went into them. My only negative? I want more.
