Ah, Leggy. The dreamy Lo-Fi Garage Rockers from Cincinnati are back, and if their last EP, Nice Try was ‘like Vanilla Ice Cream (with some Kirsch), Apple Pie (with gold leaf Vanilla Kirsch Ice Cream), and Romeo and Juliet… if Shakespeare had Punk-Rock dreams‘ then their new EP, DANG, is midnight sipping sorrows on Ciroc listening to WAVES and watching that new Lana Del Rey video with Father John Misty.
The bands 2015 single ‘Grrrls Like Us’ is still a song I hum to myself on a regular basis, who says you have to be Drake or Rihanna to make a catchy song?. If you haven’t already, listen above put my passive aggressive and assertive claim to the test.
(Editor’s Note – Don’t forget to check out our review of the bands first EP, Nice Try, which was nominated for our 2015 awards. CLICK HERE – MS.)
DANG is the sound you’d make after listening to opening track ‘Bruises’, if you were “proper country” American and deep into a bottle of Mountain Dew. But ‘Bruises’ right? is easily the BEST song Leggy have every released.
Adonis and sonnets are back: ‘I thought I heard a sonnet/I thought he was Adonis/but he broke my little heart like it was just/a pinky promise.’ And the coo of that chorus ‘I show it off like it’s real‘ – the confidence of the situation is laid out and it’s stand-out – drowning under this dirty sea of Indie-Garage Rock-psych is just so invitingly sinful – after hours, Punk-Rock never sounded so good.
‘Even Lana’ is what every post-Lana Del Rey tumblite (is that what tumblr people are called?) wants, the hope that if ‘even Lana found a man who fit her better than her favourite sweater’ then we all can.
‘Backyard’ is you smoking a cigarette and blowing smoke into the face of your ex and DANG really just rips out an owns a “post-Del Rey’ confident demeanour that is for the total of ten minutes dressed in an Indie-Punk coat almost designed by Vivienne Westwood. If Leggy’s sound was cleaner then maybe these songs could appear on the catwalk, it’s already been done by similar bands like Cherry Glazerr and The Garden, but the noise is one of the Leggy’s main attractions and is simply the noise.
The final scoop of this EP is entitled ‘Waisted’ and to put it simply, sounds like an alternate reality where Black Flag went Garage Rock in their mid-career era.
So you should just sit around and listen to ‘Bruises’ on repeat because ‘Work’ isn’t as good as ‘Bitch Better Have My Money’ so what else do you have to listen to? Leggy are bringing in 2016 and making it theirs, that debut album better hit us soon.
