Tooth And Claw – ‘Hector’.

Tooth And Claw – Sheffield, England, United Kingdom.

If you – Click Here – you will find an article written about a small time Post-Rock project by the name of Wanderer. The article was written by a less experienced MF and about a band themselves in the throws of their own sonic youth.

Wanderer’s music was stellar ambient and Instrumental Post-Rock despite its bedroom recordings and I was and I’m sure you will be, pleased to know the band have decided to keep their previous recordings under the previous moniker so of you haven’t already, do indulge.

‘Hector’ however is the new monikers first output and sees the band professionally recorded for the first time. Clocking in at just over ten-minutes the track takes the band’s more ambient line and only strays into more weighted territory at its mid and end-point.

‘Hector’ is sombre, melodic and thoughtful in the most intriguing way. Even two minutes in the band have you hooked on the same layered guitars as they ever-so slowly gain more presence without any percussion anywhere in sight as you are walking through the isolated winter forest conjured in front of you. It is here that ‘Hector’ gets more complicated and begins to make it’s move.

From the 3:16 mark the track explodes into almost anthemic and cathartic Post-Rock as those same near-dreamy guitar-layers, tones and lines feel all the more triumphant atop the slow thudding percussion in the strongest most memorable part of a memorable track.

After falling into a slow and again sombre and relaxing ebb it is not until just over the seven-minute mark that Tooth And Claw shift into up-tempo, precise (and oh so twinkly) Math-Rock after whatever was going through dear Hector’s mind has levelled out as he finds his purpose. It is here that the tracks ending rivals its cumbersome cathartic mid-point. ‘Hector’ has had you hook, line and sinker yet is gently letting you go.

Sheffield, Post-Rock, who’d have thought.
