Bobby Funk – ‘I’m A C**t’ EP
Bobby Funk – Falmouth, England, United Kingdom.
Raw as fuck and with a catchy title. This review had to be done.
Hailing from Falmouth, England, Bobby Funk are certainly a fresh sounding band. Fresh in a new sense and in the absolute barrage of noise that can only be described, not in a description but in this sentence… Sorry, I mean review. You’d think I’d tell you what I think after 3 or 4 lines? Here’s MF’s review of ‘I’m A C**t’.
However before we get to that, a few lines from the bands press kit:
‘The band operates under a strictly anti-fascist, anti-authoritarian, DIY ethic.‘ – Now this, this is something that is very important in today’s society and current global political climate and very much an integral part of the Punk scene. DIY bands and independent labels are those who work hard to get these bands the kind of exposure they deserve and of course the ear feeding goodness they produce.
‘Bobby Funk shows mainly consist of blood, vomit and Punk Rock. Known always to cause a ruckass of dumb-fuckery, the band are constantly booked to play the most haggard parties (one of which recently resulted in an ASBO – true story)’ – Certainly sounds entertaining.
Musically Fresh’s review of ‘I’m A C**t’:
1. ‘TRS’ – Bobby Funk have certainly got the nack for capturing attention with an opening track. Pure Punk Rock fury. Think Minor Threat, but with the Street Punk English swagger of The Restarts. Clocking in at just over a minute, it begins with brief chug on the guitar then, Boom! The pace kicks in after a maniacal yelp. And then its over, leaving you wanting more.
2. ‘Monitors Ain’t Punk’ – Track two then, slightly different, a bouncing bass line in the vein of Black Flag opens the song, before that swagger is back. A slower tempo on this track… well, slow for the genre and Bobby Funk. It certainly isn’t boring, as the bands witty delivery (something you tend to find in a lot of UK Punk) comes through well enough to give the song a difference. ‘Monitors ain’t punk, monitors ain’t punk, why would you want to hear yourself when your this fucking drunk?’ He has a point. Whether is is down to personal experience or not, its a fun song.
3. ‘K Grind’ – Anyone who skates will appreciate this song. Although they will have to do it quickly as it clocks at 1:36… Another blast of 80’s sounding Hardcore Punk, ‘K Grind’ picks the pace from ‘TRS’s wake and deals with the difficulty of a ‘K Grind’ or ‘5-0 Grind’. Now my only experience of this is on many hours on the Tony Hawk games played over the years and even falling off on there looked a tad painful. The ‘Five-oh’ obviously hasn’t gone well for Bobby Funkhouse as he screams ‘I’m in so much fucking pain, there is absolutely nothing to gain from K Grinds unless you’re clinically insane’. Punk and Skating have always been bedfellows. However, lets not forget the bails and fails.
4. ‘I’m a C**t’ – The title track. I’d like to think this track would go down well live, in a dingy underground club or a living room gig. Track four shows a different side to the bands style, bouncier, with a Ska infused rhythm it’s bound to get a few people bobbing around, and maybe skanking, I’d skank to this song. Have you ever arisen one morning, or stood up in the evening and thought, ‘… I’m gonna drink until I cant stand…’ because you’ve had a bad day? Well this song will probably relate. A Punk song about being a, well, you know what – it happens. The vocals aren’t massively clear in places, but a song with that content who gives a shit. Its in your face and angry, which doesn’t surprise me after what happens to poor old Bobby; ‘Got arrested now I’m in a cell, how long I’ll be here, only time will tell, I need a shit and the bucket’s over flowing, on the floor of the open cell drunken and ruined’.
5. ‘Katie’ – ‘Kaaaaaatieee ahuhuhuuhuhuhuhuhuh’. Oh dear, Katie has been upsetting some people. The last track begins with a cheeky Ska intro before the story of Katie begins. She’s obviously been casing havoc; ‘You’ve got them all wrapped round your little finger…’ , an issue the band is not happy with, so they call out to their friends and try to reason with them. She is bad news! We’ve all known people like this. ‘Please, please get a fucking grip, this is what I’m saying and take the tip. She’s no good for you, break it off with her…’ I think we can all put a quid in the jar at least once for hearing that as advice. A more upbeat song that reminds you London Punks Anonymous Tip, ‘Katie’ again shows the Ska-Punk side of the band yet still keeping up their often breakneck tempo. If it already isn’t, ‘Katie’ is surely to become a fan favourite.
A good first effort from the Falmouth 4-piece, available on band member Alex Smith’s own label, Autonomonster Records, and is also available from Amazon and the bands Bandcamp profile, on MP3, hard copy CD and 7″ inch. Catch them at a gig if you can. Needless to say, MF will be keeping an eye on this band.
Punk’s not dead, it’s Bobby Funk. 7.5/10
