Keywords are important but then again so are all words and with that the opening track from the latest EP from Montoneros, the words are cutting against the twinkly Math-Rock.
Bad politics, creative abrasion, personal differences? Any or all of the aforementioned could have inspired these lyrics as the stark but quite beautiful contrast compliments the chaotically precise and homely Math-Rock.
‘Hold Yr Phone Tight 2nite’ is far more rhythmic with long drawn out instrumental sections and a far more Indie orientated guitar tone alongside the band’s signature twang. Vocally the as per usual Montoneros drone is as subdued as ever as it fits into the puzzle nigh-on perfectly.
A considerable point for myself and at least something I can’t help but admire and find myself intrigued by with this band, is their applicability. They tease you with dreams of longer songs as well as Post-Rock and more experimental compositions but also a very brief heaviness where their inspiration momentarily reaches boiling point.
The above is what it is and proves my point well enough before the best on this short EP comes to fruition through all the twinkles and Emo gloom preceding it.
‘Just Because I Don’t Care Doesn’t Mean I Don’t Understand’ does have a title you’d find on a teenage Emo release from way back when in the time of the fringes but it should not be seriously judged on such.
This final track plays with the band’s Pop sensibilities and filters them through their Math-Rock sieve. This is all alongside another slice of playful and youthful frolic through a deep rumbling bass and almost Indie/Funk ensemble.
“Ensemble” is such an out of place word, but isn’t out of place is this final track, on this release, lovingly composed by this band. My advice? Eat your vegetables but also get this EP.
