Fresh Picks: Butcher In The Fog.

Butcher In The Fog – London, England, United Kingdom.

With a three year gap between the distorted low-ridden Punk, Metal and groove-mesh of Something Bright and Scary and the latest slab of cathartic rage that is A Screaming Reflection, London bruisers Butcher In The Fog are band that indeed take their time and they are band that should certainly you take your own time with.

The band inundate their craft with distorted and eerie groove dusted with dark melodic guitar-work citing influences from general adorations of Punk-Rock and Grunge to the titans that are Mastodon. The aforementioned Something Bright and Scary is a must have for Punks whose tastes edge away from the core-bands. Butcher In The Fog are ‘big on Nirvana‘ with Bleach and Live From The Muddy Banks Of Wishkah both clear influences on both their ebbing and darkly seductive groove, onward to their Cobain-esque Hardcore Punk.

Butcher In The Fog are for the Stoner Rock addicts with slightly more “umph” and with the first 2015 release there really isn’t a dull moment. In fact if you’re oh-so inclined towards the likes of Sludge Metal/Hardcore Punk staples Black Tusk or Stoner Rock household names Red FangSomething Bright and Scary is essential listening.

A Screaming Reflection is the album released in triumph after three years away from the kit for drummer Alex De La Cour, who was sadly unable to play due to a terrible case of Tendinitis. The eponymous opening track combines visceral Metallic Hardcore Punk-Rock with ear-worming darkness drenched Classic Rock guitar work. All of which is very fitting for a band returning for the love of it.

This second record employs more from a lead guitar that wasn’t even doing a bad job in the first place as the band’s penchant for Punk-Rock in general makes itself increasingly known. They match one part Skate Punk and one part Metal alongside gritty Grunge distortion and pummelling percussion in ‘Hell’s Teeth’ and it’s nothing short of fantastic.

Cancer Bats and latter day Black Flag would be other go to bands to match with the London three-piece in regard to the level in which Butchers In The Fog combine Punk and Hardcore with all things Stoner, Southern Rock and Metal.

In fact, Butcher In The Fog are a band that crossover enough genre barriers that most who enjoy any of the above or anything related to it for that matter would undoubtedly feel the appeal.

The idea of finding one butcher in the fog is bad enough, but three of them making music as such as this is damn-near terrifying in the best and most sonically and indeed riffingly way possible.
