The words Bath and Pop-Punk aren’t normally two you hear together in unison within the literary construct known as the sentence. So when you do hear the words together you sometimes find yourself confused or just picturing an image of a giant slice of Pizza with a snapback on backward, having some much needed relaxation after difficult day “hating this town”.
A curious thing about the contemporary Pop-Punk scene is where the bands are taking their influence from. The common denominators are almost universal, names which I need not mention but with the genre having diversified as much as it has, influence from collected eras can be easier to pick apart rather than specific bands.
Which is where ‘Never Meant’ by Summoned By Ash becomes relevant. In similarity to their earlier material, the Easycore sound of the early 2000s acts as a solid base, with the more recent “rockier” more Pop-Rock infused sound creating contrast with the crunching rhythms.
The notable part though is the crossover into classic territory. As much as the jagged sound has bite in itself, the more stripped and classic Pop-Punk Summoned By Ash are infusing in ‘Never Meant’ makes the single and is something I would like to hear more of, with 2:13 – 2:36 standing as an absolute highlight.
The band are dropping their next EP, Someday, very soon and with ‘Never Meant’ as a point of reference, those inclined to the Pop-Punk side should take note.
