It’s been a long wait with members the band going on to release stellar albums with other Melbourne groups but Postscript have returned this 2018 with a short but explosive three track EP of jagged socio-political Skate Punk.

The band’s clear Victorian Skate Punk sound was well-entrenched with their eponymous release of 2015, alongside emotive song-writing and more melodies that you can shake a stick at themselves alongside arguable influence from early 2000’s Emo and Post-Hardcore. This time around, tones of Pennywise, Good Riddance and a wealth of legendary Skate Punk names all warrant comparisons within this EP yet the band are still very much their own.

Despite Black Blood only being comprised of three tracks, it displays its craft in a manner of a full-length in regard to its tenacity.

‘Sorry State’ is metallic from the off in a manner very popular within the European Skate Punk scene as it merges this with classic Aussie/Victorian Skate Punk in the driven verses and layered and hugely melodic chorus. The harder vocals missing from the band’s earlier work begin to manifest themselves on this newer material and goes far to balance the stark contrast between Jess Cuman’s melodic vocals and the jagged nature of the guitars.

If ‘Sorry State’ was layered, jagged and complex then ‘Too Blind Too See’ is relatively classic within the context of the band. Postscript sound bigger and more cohesive and most notably – comfortable. Luke Baird’s lead guitar is stronger than ever as it builds layers supported by Cuman’s own efforts with both Chem and Michael maintaining the rhythmic foundation with no fault in sight.

If Black Blood and its first two tracks cathartically embodies Leftist-Punk critique then with the last track ‘S.O.S’, Postsctipt take a more nilistic stance as the reality and climate of hopelessness negates any glimpse of hope as the watch it all go to hell.

Tracks one and two provide a great introduction to band for newer fans and relax those long-timers in confirmation that Postscript are still all that makes them so appealing but are also moving forward. With that said however, the band fall back on their desire to produce up-tempo melodic 90’s Skate Punk with the anthemic ‘S.O.S’ sitting as the best of a best bunch.

Here’s to the next release.
