New, Again are band who decided to take a break from it all and focus both on their musical endeavours as much as they didn’t. Some time elapsed, new music was written and the band went through something of a shuffle and in doing so gained a new member, with Gian Astacaan from London vintage Pop-Punk three-piece, No Insight. A band of whom – to segue slightly – are one to indulge in if a time where what is now classic and almost “dad-rock” Pop-Punk such as Green Day, Sum 41 and Blink-182 riddled the airwaves still appeals to your nostalgic ear canal.

The now five-piece New, Again are thankfully back at it again. The band teased us with the youtube-only single ‘I Tried’ towards the end of the last year and but only a few days go, released their brand new video for ‘Better Now’ which will this coming Friday complete the Everyone Lied double single digital release.

New, Again have always been a product of their time with the their sound echoing the likes of Jimmy Eat World, Taking Back Sunday and mid-to-late career Blink-182 and the time where crooning Emo-Pop and that generation of Pop-Punk intertwined creating ear-worming and addictive Pop-Rock that many people couldn’t help but admit they liked.

New, Again  always straddled the line between this Emo-Pop and the harder, grittier and a more up-tempo-determined Pop-Punk approach which left their sound somewhere between this and indeed quite unique albeit slightly undecided. Said stance was found in their 2016 EP These City Lights Aren’t Half As Bright As They Used To Be and is again in force for ‘I Tried’, although notably the evolution of such is more clean cut and comfortable as the balance between the band’s harder and more melodic Pop-sensibilities is far more evenly balanced, as they tease each-other all the way from the vocals to the drums and back again.

This brings us to ‘Better Now’ where New, Again takes the negative tale of ‘I Tried’ and instead quite literally sing of how it is indeed, better now. Almost instantly vocalist Vik Mudhar and his move away from rhythm guitar is well founded in his vocals as the increased attention has not only allowed his melodies to travel but his entire approach to feel more at home, a theme that each aspect of the band’s output now completely embodies.

‘Better Now’ is cathartic and tuneful, the dedicated guitars create layered melodies perfect for the soaring chorus and contrast perfectly at the hints of heavier climes carried over from ‘I Tried’ and/or the band’s tendency to fall back on their other influences at a moments notice for a moment.

There we have, a little catch up and a new release tomorrow. New, Again are another London band to watch.
